Difficult study in Corona: 11% of families in lockdown had to buy a new phone so that children could study

Bhaskar Data Story: Difficult study in Corona: 11% of families in lockdown had to buy a new phone so that children could study

Schools are still closed in most states due to the corona. Where open, children are not allowed to go to school by their parents.

One in four children has neither notebooks nor a person to help with any study at home. Not only that, the number of children without dropouts and enrollment has also increased as compared to previous years.

The Annual States of Education Report (ASER or Impact) 2020 seeks to find out the impact of Corona on nationwide studies this time around. The report has come up with some shocking and even disturbing figures. The report says 11% of households bought new phones during the lockdown. 80% of them also bought smartphones so that children could study at home. Even 13% of families who do not have a smartphone said that their children use someone else's smartphone.

People are afraid of sending young children to school. The
biggest impact of corona is on young children. Parents are taking no risk for them. This is the reason why the percentage of children between the ages of 6 and 10 who have not been enrolled in school has increased in 2020 as compared to 2018.

When the team of Impact 2020 asked the parents of the children, they raised the question in front of them - the school is closed, even if we enroll in it, how to do it? That means most of the children are waiting for admission in schools. Especially in the age group of 6-10 years.

The study is being done online, what is the status of the smartphone of the children?
The impact report says that more families now have smartphones in 2020 than in 2018. In 2018, 29.6% of children in government schools had at least one smartphone in their families, an increase from 56.4%. Thus half of the children in private schools had smartphones in their families, which has now increased to three-quarters.

Smartphones are now more in the families of children than ever before, making it possible to study in lockdown. Thus about 40 percent of children did not have a smartphone, of which 11 percent bought a mobile for a child’s study during the lockdown.

More than 80% of them also bought smartphones. About 13% of those who do not have a smartphone said that children are studying by taking a smartphone from an acquaintance.
School is closed, who is helping at home?

The impact report is based on a telephonic survey this time. The children who were involved were asked who was helping them with their studies. Most of the answers grew with the help of father and older siblings along with their class. A large class also showed that no one in the family helps them in their studies and the percentage of such children has increased from 16.5% to 31.7% according to the growing class. The biggest loss due to school closure is happening to such children.

Have the books reached everyone?
In this case, the condition of children in government schools is good. At the all-India level, 84.1% of children in government schools have access to existing class books. They don't have to worry about that. Whereas, the condition of children in private schools is worrisome. One in four children (27.8%) do not have a book.
