FASTag will be mandatory for older vehicles from January 1, the new rule will take effect from April 1, 2021.

The central government has made Fastag mandatory for all older four-wheelers purchased before December 2017. The government has made it mandatory for older M and N category vehicles to have a fastag by January 1, 2021. The new rule will take effect on April 1, 2021. This rule has been made by amending Form 51 (Certificate of Insurance). 

As per the guideline announced by the government on Saturday, Festag has now made Fastag mandatory by amending the CMVR, 1989, of motor vehicles (four wheelers) sold before January 1, 2021 i.e. December 1, 2017.

The rule has already been implemented for new vehicles.
Fastag has been made mandatory at the time of registration for four wheelers and automobile companies or their dealers have been entrusted with the responsibility of supplying it. In addition, from October 1, 2019, it has been made mandatory to fit fastags for national permit vehicles.

The government aims to fully digitalize the toll plaza. This can have many positive effects. When there is a digital toll, there will be no loss of revenue and consumption of large quantities of petrol (petrol and diesel or gas) will be reduced across the country.

What is Fastag?

Fastag is an electronic toll collection technology. It uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). Fastag is a rechargeable prepaid tag that you have to put on the inside of your vehicle's windshield.

The sensor on the toll plaza tracks the fastag on your vehicle's windscreen when your vehicle approaches the toll plaza. Fees charged at Toll Plaza are then deducted from your Fasttag account. This way you can pay the fee without stopping at the toll plaza.

This tag in the vehicle will start working as soon as your prepaid account is activated. Also, you will have to recharge it when the amount in your Fastag account is exhausted.
