Notification public: Web series can no longer go berserk, OTT platforms and digital media will also come under government control
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued rules to regulate online news portals and media websites following a controversial order ending journalists' accusations of 'fake news'. The ministry has also issued a notification for this, according to which online news portals, online content providers will now come under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
The central government had earlier argued in a case in the Supreme Court that the regulation of online media is even more than TV. Now the government has taken steps to bring media outlets that provide news or content through online media.
The government formed a 10-member committee to regulate news portals and media websites. The committee comprised the secretaries of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Law, Home, IT and the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion. In addition, MyGov's chief executive and officials from the Press Council of India, the News Broadcasters Association and the Indian Broadcasters Association were also made members. The committee was asked to recommend a 'proper policy' for online media, news portals and online content platforms.
According to the Centre's affidavit filed in the Supreme Court, the government has licensed regular news channels to 385 channels across the country. These channels also broadcast entertainment programs along with news, including story, debate program and many other programs to reach out to the people.
Apart from this, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has also licensed 530 channels which broadcast entertainment, sports and devotional, spiritual programs in full. These news channels were the first to form the News Broadcasters Association (NBA) for self-regulation. This includes many of the country's leading news channels. Is willing to subscribe to it. It is managed by Justice Arjun Kumar Sikri, a retired Supreme Court judge. Another organization has recently come into existence. News Broadcasters Federation (NBF) whose executive committee is yet to make a decision.
There are still 237 channels that are not members of any organization. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has constituted an inter-ministerial committee to deal with complaints, scams or negligence against such channels. The committee also deals with complaints.
